Lead poisoning was a very big public health issue when we were growing up. There were public health education campaigns alerting us of the dangers of lead poisoning. Summer jobs were an essential part of helping support your family (08:36). Poverty was very real, and there was always a need to supplement household income. This was also a way to teach responsibility and a sense of caring about the entire family and not being selfish. Taking in children of family or friends is very common in the community, we were taught to be nurturing caretakers of whoever was in need (10:29).
Rights Statement

Each oral history interview is considered to be co-created, ‘joint work’ among the oral historian, narrator, and, in this case, the National Public Housing Museum.

NPHM manages the components of copyright (reproduction, distribution, adaption, performance, and display) using Creative Commons Licenses.
